This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Low lighting and candles at the tables give Chillies an intimate feel, complementing the sharing nature of its Indian tapas menu. The menu recommends two to three starters and three to four mains between two – leading to eyes bigger than stomachs as there’s no skimping on portions here. The samosa starter is a tasty duo – one the traditional minced lamb and the other an unusual chicken and mushroom, both packed with flavour. The desi chilli puri, also well proportioned, has the addition of achari lime giving a tangy kick to the chickpea topping. Mains feature a good seafood selection as well as traditional meat and vegetable options and lighter dishes. The mixed tikka is a sizzling combination of chicken, lamb and seekh marinated in Punjabi spices, while the chooza achari achieves a deliciously deep flavour with its combination of chilli and lime pickle. The lentil-based favourite, tarka daal, doesn’t disappoint either. Chillies is a Halal estabishment and no alcohol is served or allowed on the premises – affording an opportunity to try a refreshing lassie or smoothie. The chance to sample so many intriguing and beautifully prepared dishes makes Chillies a great option for a curry fix.
- High point: Broad tempting menu
- Low point: Lighting can make reading menu hard
