The reputation of Garlic's Giovanna Eusebi grows with each passing year. It's remarkable only in that her main platform, Garlic deli, is in the culinary wilds of Shettleston, east of Parkhead. In 2006, she hosted a couple of gourmet meals at the House for an Art Lover, picking up admirers such as chef Andrew Fairlie. The shop, often manned by her charming mother Gina, is choc-full of Italian meats, cheeses (including buffalo mozzarella) and some sweets such as Sicilian cannoli. But the kitchen cranks out all sorts of ready meals, too. Pasta dishes are just the start - you can also get slow-cooked lamb, pan-seared seabass or stuffed chicken breast, each always coming with freshly made sauces and accompaniments. Nothing has a price tag on it, but don't expect to spend much - unless you, as so many seem to do, keep adding to the order. As we go to press, Garlic has plans to open a second shop in Gibson Street, Hillhead.
