The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

One of the West End's style bars, Halo is just coming out of a period undergoing some changes in management. The trendy décor, however, is unchanged, with groovy lighting incorporated into elaborate picture frames and retro-look chairs. There is still an eye-catching black leather-studded bar, with all manner of glasses suspended above it. What is currently being revised is the cocktail menu, and the shoddy presentation of an interim food menu does not tie in with the stylish furnishings. Given the surroundings, the menu offers a surprisingly standard array of bar food made up of offerings such as panini, pastas and dishes from the char-grill. There are positive signs, but it's not the complete package yet: bruschetta is a little soggy, but still nice and garlicky, while a Thai chicken burger is delicately flavoured, but needs better chips. Finish with an award-winning cocktail, as there are no desserts. More tweaks and refinements are clearly underway while Halo takes a bit of time to work on its polish.
