Descend the stairs from Wok and Wine's unassuming street-level doorway and you're welcomed into a huge 70-cover restaurant that is cleverly divided by bamboo blinds into two intimate dining areas. The vast menu could also benefit from being split, but the unhurried service affords diners time to browse the hefty booklet at their leisure. Once you've waded through the various banquet options, traditional Chinese staples and Thai and Japanese choices, move on to the wine list, which features reasonable options at reasonable prices. The extensive array of dishes and drinks does not detract from the quality, however, and, in this case, good things come to those who wait. Small-portion 'wok bites' make for light shared starters: the Szechuan squid is firm without being overcooked and the lemon chicken, coated in deliciously crunchy breadcrumbs, is a refreshing take on the usual bog-standard gloopy affair so often featured on lazier Chinese menus. Among the main courses, beef with pak-choi, ginger and spring onion is a well balanced choice and, with the meat sourced from Crombies of Edinburgh, is further proof that Wok and Wine has seamlessly merged its strong Chinese roots into its distinctly Scottish surroundings.
