Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

It’s a relief to find that Wok & Wine takes itself as seriously as any of the Scottish and French restaurants dotted around New Town. Stephanie Lo, the ebullient proprietor, is passionate about her ingredients and making her customers feel welcome; her chef, Mr Feng, shares this passion when it comes to the quality and presentation of his cooking. The establishment itself, like the Chinese-fusion menu, is refined: stylish rather than fashionable. Wor-tip dumplings are accompanied by a light-red rice vinegar, a welcome change from the industry standard soy sauce. Similarly, the salty, crispy salmon teriyaki comes with only enough sauce to coat it, so the pak choi is still crunchy and refreshing. A great deal of care appears to have been taken to source quality local produce, the fish from Musselburgh, the beef from East Lothian. This is particularly noticeable when it comes to the dessert menu: if S Luca makes the best ginger ice-cream and Illy the finest coffee then it makes sense to serve them – even if it means you can’t take the credit. It’s that sort of place.

  • High point: Subtle fusion of Chinese dishes with Japanese and Vietnamese influences
  • Low point: Being unable to eat more

Went here tonight after reading good reviews here. Had kids so came o Saturday at 5:30. Starters were nice, mains were sub standard 'takeaway'. Sauces very glutenous and tasted like they were from a bottle. Sent crispy beef back as extremely bland if you taste it without the sauce. Other mains entirely underseasoned. Whoever was in the kitchen tonight was not tasting what they were sending out. Sorry Wok and Wine...always on the lookout for somewhere new to spend my money. I will not come back to you.

I really enjoyed my meal here, much more so than Chop Chop in Leith actually. The atmosphere is quite classy, service was friendly and efficient and the food was superb. I find Chinese (or at least our Western adaptations of it) can be really greasy and salty and although I had salt and pepper squid at Wok and Wine, it was deep fried without unpleasant greasiness, and the squid was tender and flavoursome. Will be going back very soon.

Wok and Wine Edinburgh

Having worked in Edinburgh for 5 years and had all sorts of meals in dodgy places from the sublime to the ridiculous it was a refreshing change to visit Wok and Wine last Saturday. What a gem of a place - with really friendly waiting staff and a menu that makes ordering difficult - only because of the choice.

Our starters of Chicken Moneybags( wonderful chicken in a light coconut sauce in filo pastry), steamed har-kow dumplings, sichuan prawns was absolutely first class, which together with the best hot and sour soup I have ever tasted lined us up for the next delights.

Crispy aromatic duck was excellent , which followed by duck with pak choi made my partner "duck" out of having any consideration for a pudding. However plumping for an old favourite?of banana fritters only confirmed that the meal we had was simple sublime from start to finish.

Overall I have dined in a multitude of restaurants but Wok and Wine for the quality and freshness they procuce is right up there with the best of them - including the so called special chinese restaurants. So don`t miss this one - this restaurant is one in a million
