Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

Technically on the Southside, Salsa is just a pleasant five-minute walk from the city centre via the Clyde's suspension pedestrian bridge. The discreet location suits the ambience of the restaurant, which is refreshingly unlike most Mexican-themed establishments. With dark woods replacing the usual bright and brash colour schemes, the low-lit interior is quietly sophisticated, creating quite a romantic atmosphere. Even from a humble starter of quesadillas, it is clear that Salsa aims to serve reasonably authentic Mexican food, rather than churning out cheese and bean-smothered plates of generic stodge. Every dish tastes freshly prepared and each ingredient is identifiable. The cerdo borracho – or 'drunken pork' – is a sticky, spicy stew of lean meat prepared with apple and sherry that manages to balance its sweet and savoury flavours. Burritos, chimichangas and fajitas are present on the menu, but diners looking for something different might try the fish with almond and coriander: its creamy sauce is mild enough not to overpower the fresh taste of the sea bass. A cut above most other Mexican restaurants, Salsa is well worth a trip off the beaten path.

  • High point: Excellent cocktails
  • Low point: Location means it can be quiet

I had my birthday party at Salsa and had a very good time until the end of the evening. Coffee was included at the end of the set party menu, none arrived at the end of the meal, we could see the cups sitting on the bar but staff were encouraging us to leave by removing evey glass from the table (finished or not) I explained to the waitress if they were keen to close up we could leave without the coffee but could we please get a small discount on the bill since the price was included in the set menu. The manageress was called who told me, very abruptly, we had been asked if we wanted more drinks and should have said then if we wanted coffee but she would take £10 off our £600 pound bill as a good will gesture. Not the best end to a birthday party so I would strongly recommend anyone considering a party at Salsa thinks again. I would however recommend the excellent Salsa teacher who was part of the party package and teaches Salsa at Tiger Tiger in Glasgow, she was the highlight of the night.
