Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Just over the pedestrian bridge, on the south side of the Clyde, Salsa’s location is a basement in an area with many legal offices which keep it ticking over during the day. On midweek nights the restaurant’s subdued lighting makes it a discreet spot for couples, but at the weekend they encourage salsa party nights, where groups can scoff their fill of Mexican food before hauling their well-fed bodies on to the small dance area for a salsa lesson. The food mostly concentrates on staple dishes, with large helpings of fajitas which come with free top-ups of all the trimmings and there are gourmet taster platters to share some of the most popular starters. They also offer more unusual flavourings, like a Mayan ‘secret spice’ marinade for chicken, or salmon cooked with a chilli, lime and coriander crust. A Guatemalan-style chimmichanga is spicy and filling, with slow-cooked pork and a subtle tinge of paprika to perk it up, while the burritos use chocolate accents to balance the marinated chicken strips and pinto beans mix. An inventive coconut chimmichanga dessert makes up for it, with ice-cream wrapped in a light fried tortilla, dusted with coconut for an indulgent, gooey treat.

  • High point: Complimentary margaritas and corn chips are a nice welcome
  • Low point: Dry and over-cooked spiral fries

I think Salsa is lovely wee restaurant. The staff are always friendly and attentive without being overbearing.
The food is good value for money especialy on the 5pm/pre theartre menu. I have mixed experiances, sometimes the food has been amazing other time it has been pretty standard. This may be to do with the chef or how hungry I am at the time.
Because it is off the main track it is normally a little quieter so food comes quickly and service is generally really good.

Well, it was a freezing cold day, no really cold and it seemed like a nice idea to have a spicy lunch. What about Mex? What about Salsa - after all it's a cut above the rest. It wasn't much warmer in restaurant than it was outside - so that wasn't much good. We were chittering. Explanation - it takes a while to heat up!!! So, bowl of beef chilli for me and meatballs for the missus. Verdict? Well it was tasty enough but that's all really. It wasn't very spicy. The rice was quite nice with fresh coriander and tomato mixed through it. Will we be back? Probably not. Would I recommend it to anyone? No. This place is off the beaten track and quite honestly it's not worth the effort to find it. Try somewhere else.

Starter was cold and it was replaced by an overcooked microwaved replacement.
The cheese in the buritto gave my friend an inconvenient stomach which meant a long and tiring toilet stop. Twice.
The pudding was simple and knew it made me pile on the pounds by the mouthfuls!
Verdict - avoid at all costs. Or handle the smelly toilet trips. Twice.

I had my birthday party at Salsa and had a very good time until the end of the evening. Coffee was included at the end of the set party menu, none arrived at the end of the meal, we could see the cups sitting on the bar but staff were encouraging us to leave by removing evey glass from the table (finished or not) I explained to the waitress if they were keen to close up we could leave without the coffee but could we please get a small discount on the bill since the price was included in the set menu. The manageress was called who told me, very abruptly, we had been asked if we wanted more drinks and should have said then if we wanted coffee but she would take £10 off our £600 pound bill as a good will gesture. Not the best end to a birthday party so I would strongly recommend anyone considering a party at Salsa thinks again. I would however recommend the excellent Salsa teacher who was part of the party package and teaches Salsa at Tiger Tiger in Glasgow, she was the highlight of the night.
