The Philadelphia Fish and Chicken bar has been a towering presence on Great Western Road for longer than most locals can remember. Easy to spot by its New York cab colours of yellow, black and white it has served many a student, school kid, drinker and busy worker over the years. Owned by the same gregarious and genial family who run La Parmagiana Italian restaurant next door their skill and expertise are put to good use conveying a continuous throughput of Scottish favourites and staples such as black puddings, smoked sausage and above average fish suppers into the early hours at weekends. As befits their origins, they also produce a nice line in fresh crusty pizzas with a wide array of toppings while a mere four quid can pick up a choice of freshly made pastas delivered from next door's kitchen – a creative pitch for lighter dishes which may help influence those tetchy family arguments about where to buy a takeaway.
