Based in Canonmills and something of a local institution, Eastern Spices is secure in its good name with local curry-heads. This security can result in a little complacency on occasion, but when it’s good, Spices is very, very good. A starter of chana puree is a tart fusion of spice, chickpeas and lemon juice, and the range of mains is so vast as to be baffling at first. If in doubt, the ginger murgh makes a substantial and warming main course feast, but if you’re in the mood for something fierier then the jalfrezie is a particularly good combination of char-grilled chicken and dry, citrus heat. Online ordering is now available through Yhum.com, so take the opportunity to browse the strong range of side dishes available, too, but order sparingly: the mains are enough to satisfy the largest appetite.
- High point: A solid range of old favourites
- Low point: Some dishes are on the oily side

After a lazy sunday afternoon we decided to consult the list to help us satisfy an insatiable desire for indian cuisine.
Eastern Spices is centrally located with parking available. The menu has a good range of specialties together with classics however no one specialty truly took my fancy. We had poppadoms with onion chutney, mushroom pilau rice, peshwari naan, tandoori lamb tikka and lamb Muglai Chana Gosht.
Good: Timely service, Peshwari naan, Lamb Chana Gosht was tender and fairly tasty but ultimately lacking in 'freshly-ground-spice-flavour'.
Bad: Grossly overcooked dry lamb tandoori, Greasy small portion of rice, cold tandoori on arrival, chutney gave the impression of chopped onion blended with tomato puree
Overall a fairly poor takeaway indian and we wont be rushing back.

We ordered from here based on the review in "Scotland The Best". It turned out to less than impressive. My chicken biryani was probably the worst I have ever tasted, lacking any depth of taste, flavour and seasoning. The vegetable curry was the same. The other dishes looked okay but overall I could have got better indian meals from any supermarket - very disappointing.
