A chippy that offers prawns with garlic and ginger – choice of single or supper, of course – alongside the traditional favourites has got to be something a bit different. L'Alba D'Oro (the name means 'dawn of gold') is a long-established leader in Edinburgh takeaways, and it's always busy. The sizzling vats produce a stream of golden fried fish and chicken, prawns and squid, pies and puddings (white, black and haggis), burgers, sausages and vegetarian alternatives that are not restricted to deep-fried cheese and tomato pizza. Chunky chips taste of real potato and the aforementioned prawns are surprisingly delicate in flavour and texture. Light-to-the-bite batter filled with fresh, flaky haddock is particularly recommended. Watch out for the 50p charge levied if you're paying by plastic.
