Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

What do Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Cary Grant and Errol Flynn all have in common, aside from the obvious? Amalfi Pizzeria. Or more specifically, its glitzier former guise as the Lido Café, which, being situated suitably close to the famous old Glasgow Empire Theatre, used to serve the stars in its 1940s and 50s heyday. Some of the fittings haven't changed since then, and there are a few black and white photos harking back to the golden age of stage and screen. Otherwise, the eatery's current incumbents run the place as a simple, cosy trattoria. One gem among the starters is the patate ripiene: four small potato skins topped with ham and mozzarella, oven-baked until crispy and served in a chilli sauce. Risotto contadina comes recommended as a main course, but be warned that roughly chopped spicy chillies lurk amid the sautéed rice, onions, peppers and mushrooms. The house speciality – spaghetti Amalfi – is a positively delicious 'secret recipe' surprise, served piping hot in a wrap of tin foil, tossed with chunks of mushroom, chicken and stringy mozzarella, and flavoured with a thin tomato sauce. Ol' Blue Eyes would certainly have approved.

  • High point: Pasta surprise that puts the special in speciality
  • Low point: Slightly sorry looking lemon sorbet
