Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

In the perfect spot for a bite to eat before the flicks or after the shops, Amalfi has transformed over the past few years from an old-fashioned Italian café to an inviting, upmarket diner. One narrow room, the glass frontage and visible kitchen lend it an open aspect, while dark red walls and fairy lights above provide a cosy, softly lit atmosphere. Tables look small but have more than sufficient elbow room even when the plates are down. Only house wines are available by the glass – stretch to a bottle and there are several far more interesting options. The menu is traditional and delivered in large portions. A starter of fresh calamari sautéed in garlic appeals to the eye as much as the palate, arranged on crostini with a lightly dressed salad garnish. Potato skins baked with ham and mozzarella are equally pretty on the plate but rather lacking in flavour. An authentically charred base is the highlight of their tasty stone-baked pizzas, although more restraint with the cheese would be preferable. Home-made tiramisu is top pick for afters.

  • High point: Charming staff, powerful coffee
  • Low point: Cheese – you CAN have too much

Reviews of Amalfi Pizzeria (148 West Nile Street, Glasgow)

4. Tricia & Rosie, GLASGOW – 3 March 2010, 9:39pm3 starsAmalfi PizzeriaReport

We went for the pre theatre - good value at £10.95 for 2 courses, no complaints about the quality of food or portion sizes.
Drinks very expensive £2.20 for a soda and lime - probably not even a half pint and £3.95 for a bottle of Peroni. The restaurant has been recently refurbished so I suppose they have to try and recoup the cost of that in some way or is that just par for the course for italian restaurants?

3. ANGELA GLASGOW, amalfi restaraunt glasgow – 31 August 2008, 11:26amAmalfi PizzeriaReport

Visited the Amalfi on Saturday 30.08.08 with my family and we were all pleasantly surprised. The four of us all ate from the ala'cart menu and everyone had different meals everything was faultless. We had our starters and we asked if we could wait 20/30 mins for our main courses this was not a problem to many places now a days try and rush you but not the Amlfi. The wine was lovely and the atmosphere was relaxed well done to all the staff. Also can I recomend the al pepe sauce it was amazing will definatly be going back keep up the great work guys
