Moyra Jane's has been a popular Southside venue for some time now and it is easy to see why. With its wood panelling and marble-topped tables, it has the charm of a genteel tea-room from another era. Staff are polite and smart in their long, white aprons. The owners are keen to emphasise that their ingredients come from local shops, butchers and fishmongers. They are also slightly evangelical about the fact that all their cakes and pastries are home-made – a fact that becomes apparent the minute you bite into one. The banoffee pie is satisfyingly sticky but not overly sweet, while a passion fruit cheesecake has a light and fluffy texture. Meringues the colour of demerara sugar are served in pairs and sandwiched together with cream. On the savoury front, Moyra Jane's offers hearty soups, sandwiches and generously filled baked potatoes. The menu is also supplemented by daily specials, such as chicken wrapped in Parma ham (served with a creamy pepper sauce) or roasted peppers stuffed with feta and roasted pine nuts. The all-day breakfasts include luxurious options, such as eggs Benedict and eggs Florentine.
- High point: The cakes
- Low point: It can get very busy
