Avoca's shabbily charming interior offers a haven from Stockbridge's melee of stylish bars, without compromising on quality. This wonderfully laid-back watering hole is cosy but not cramped and is neatly tucked away on a side street off the area's busy thoroughfare. Packed fridges, gleaming spirits and an array of local and continental beers on tap are shown up only by the fullness of its menu. A pleasing mix of comfort food and contemporary cuisine attempts to satisfy a range of palates, as does Avoca's special weekend brunch menu. A classic Caesar salad with chicken and bacon is an unexpectedly hearty starter, while a plate of bread and dips – including a memorable home-made pesto – could also be a snack to share. Turning to main courses, a prime Scotch beef burger is hefty and juicy, and beer-battered haddock flakes attractively into a plate of peas and giant five-inch-long chips. Chunky desserts are a force to be reckoned with: sticky toffee pudding truly lives up to its name, while white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake is fruity and sweet. A broad selection of global wines appears to underline Avoca's commitment to creating sumptuous food in a welcoming environment.
- High point: Unpretentious pub grub in one of Edinburgh's more pretentious neighbourhoods
- Low point: The menu is perhaps a little too predictable

My work mates & I went to Avoca in Edinburgh for lunch on the 7th May 2008 and we thought the food was fantastic. I know we will go back there several times as we all want to try all the other dishes. We also wish to get our teeth into the deserts. Thanks for a lovely lunch. WWP

Excellent food for a bar, and attentive service. One of the tastyest, no-fuss meals I have had in a while. Must go there more often.
