The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Just a few steps from the hurly burly of Stockbridge, Avoca attracts more drinkers than diners during the week but normally sees that trend reversed at weekends. A traditional wooden bar is the centrepiece, with stools, settees and a couple of window seats in addition. There are also several tables in a quieter area to the rear, which can be booked for small groups. Starters such as haggis fritters with spiced apple chutney may suffice as a light lunch, but it is the mains that really distinguish Avoca’s food from traditional pub grub. Daily specials could include a tender pork belly on mash and black pudding or haddock in a crispy beer batter with rooster chips. Both do justice to good local produce. Desserts including apple crumble or cheesecake follow the same formula of familiar favourites done well. Peckish late-night drinkers can also order pizza deliveries through an arrangement with a nearby restaurant.
- High point: High quality, locally sourced food
- Low point: Rear dining area misses out on the pub atmosphere

Excellent food for a bar, and attentive service. One of the tastyest, no-fuss meals I have had in a while. Must go there more often.

My work mates & I went to Avoca in Edinburgh for lunch on the 7th May 2008 and we thought the food was fantastic. I know we will go back there several times as we all want to try all the other dishes. We also wish to get our teeth into the deserts. Thanks for a lovely lunch. WWP
