Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

This family-run restaurant near the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh has a committed local clientele that keeps its diminutive dining area busy all year round. Despite the somewhat dated décor, there's an upbeat atmosphere and the staff are friendly and chatty. The menu is surprisingly lengthy, with a broad selection of fiery and mild dishes representing many regional Thai variations. A superb guew nam soup, for instance, is a sharp, clear vegetable broth with a hint of coconut, hosting fat, juicy chicken wontons. From the mains, a choo chee sauce bristling with heady herbs and chillies is served with spicy king prawns, while the gai yang features chunks of chicken marinated in Thai white rum and honey and barbecued to a nice smoky tint, served with a plum sauce. Special banquets, including a vegetarian option, offer a great deal for those who want to sample the multiplicity of Thai dishes at one sitting. And for those struggling with the stresses of modern life, head chef Mr Phanthachai even offers some specially balanced meal options, using steaming and char-grilling, which he claims will help lift the spirits.

  • High point: Popular with the locals
  • Low point: Could do with a makeover

Been twice. First time great food and service. Second time - did you run out of chillies for the Jungle Curry because mine was lacking any - which being the main part of the dish is kind of important!
Lanna is like all other Musselburgh eateries - a real hot or a miss!
