Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

A perfect tempura prawn sums up the expertise on display here: a prawn of unparalleled creaminess, the panko breadcrumbs brittle and crisp in contrast. It’s the benchmark of almost a decade of lauded cooking that fills seats on a wet Monday evening as tumbleweed rolls across other foyers. The polished, warm décor features work from Bangkok art students, and appeals to a smart, post-work, pre-bar set, or small groups celebrating. The translated names of the starters make exotic promises: ‘a loving couple’; ‘fleeing fish’. Tom yum soup is fresh and refreshing, lemongrass giving fragrance to subtle spicing and galangal earthing the sourness. Talay sam rod is worth travelling long distances for. The monkfish and butterflied prawns are smoky and almost caramelised from the char grill, the sauce hot and tangy with lime. A cooler, coconut-based Geang Ka-Ri is seasonal, ‘super-healthy’ and will gratify vegetarians with fresh herbs, figs and jackfruit. Prices and a wide-ranging, well considered wine list match the top-notch ingredients. Service is helpful and well-meaning but subtle waving is occasionally necessary.

  • High point: Simply the best Thai food in this town and many others
  • Low point: Not somewhere for international spies - tables are quite close together

Reviews of Dusit (49a Thistle Street, Edinburgh)

I've been eating in Dusit from almost the day it opened and I always end up back there. I travel a lot and love my food. The freshness, tastes and welcoming staff at Dusit are at least the equal of anywhere else I've ever been.

The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and the food they serve is the best Thai food I've tasted outside of Bangkok (and arguably better than many good places there).

I can't actually remember when it opened, I think 2002 or so but it remains at the top of its game all these years later. I think it will become a real Edinburgh institution.

I used to regularly frequest this resturant, but on going recently I felt let down by the quality of the ingredients and the flavours were just not authentic. I've moved on to pastures new...

10. Hot Food Dude, Edinburgh – 7 March 2011, 9:28pm1 starDusitReport

Visited Dusit the evening of the Scotland vs Ireland Six Nations match last week. Small place which suffered due to a few drunks. Cannot emphasise enough how disappointed we all were with both our meal and service.

Of the four in our party, all except myself had dined there on numerous occasions previously and I was keen to try it out having heard so many good reviews.

I love hot, thai food and ordered what we were led to believe was an exceptionally hot curry. Sadly, it was bland. The other three guests prefer more moderate food. Without exception, each of their meals was FAR too hot - even I struggled to eat them. Other tables were heard to comment that the food was too hot.

Starters were tasty - but again suffered from being too hot.

Service was a strange experience.

Staff were constantly topping up drinks even after being told certain people did not want more. I was driving but they filled my wine glass again after being clearly told not to. Despite no one getting near to finishing their main course, at no time were we asked if we enjoyed our meal. It was clear staff knew we hadn't and opted not to ask - they asked every other table how their meal was!

The mains dripped out - three of us had to end up starting while the fourth person waiting on being served. We waited almost 5 minutes without any form of an apology. Then after the mains, no dessert menu was offered. How peculiar.

On leaving, having paid, we were given our coats and thanked by a British gent who appeared to oversee the operation from a distance. On commenting we felt the food was poor he told us we should have said at the time and they'd have done something to the food to lessen the 'heat'. Strange way to deal with any negative feedback. The staff clearly knew we were no content with our meal and opted not to deal with it at the time.

A nice setting, ruined by poor service. Wont be back in a hurry.

Good but unexceptional food, which we felt was overpriced. We felt it was beneath the average Edinburgh Thai. Horrible atmosphere - a small, noisy, crowded room, with rather unfriendly and intrusive service. We were constantly interrupted by waiters asking if we wanted more drinks, and pouring our drinks for us. When we paid, they kept our £15 change, presumably assuming it was a tip, and we had to ask for it back! You get better food and service at Songkran in Stockbridge.

I think this restaurant prides itself on using expensive and fresh ingredients but the results are pretty inconsistant. Some dishes were boring after the second mouthful. They do a great yellow curry but the inclusion of culinary delights like asparagus seem ridiculous as their taste is overpowered. I would say the food was 3 out of 5 but I docked a point for the high price and hassled service.

amazing food, really great. not cheap but worth it. only reason i didnt give it 5 stars is the service was almost a bit too attentive for me, they were always fussing over us and clearing the table! surprised by the above comment because i only ever hear great things about this place and i have to agree.

I'm confused by the above review, I had a lovely meal!

I'm very new to Thai food but it was really nice, I'd recommend it.

We were in Dusit in december last year. the atmosphere was horrid: the room is so small (the restaurant itself consists in a 50 square meter-ish room) any conversation is shared with the rest of the room. horribly noisy. service was poor, if not reluctant. This was more akin to your highschool canteen than a restaurant. Food is not the best thai food you can have in edinburgh, far from it. not only we had the worst diner in a decade but they also tried to extort us for £25 of drinks we had neither odered nor consummed. Given our refusal to pay for this, the discussion heated up until the restaurant owner backed down while insulting us on many occasion. "F###ing drunks" seems to be a commonly used greeting in Dusit. After talking to many friends about Dusit, it turned up we were not the only ones to whom this happened! If you ever go to dusit out of desperation of misguidance, check you bill and stand your ground. they will shout and insult you, but they will back down eventually. If they threaten you with the police, let the police come: you actually have the right to refuse to pay once the police made a constatation of the disagreement and leave it to your solicitor.

As a long standing patron of Dusit, eating there more times than I could possibly remember with both friends and business colleagues, large parties and (too infrequently) a meal for two with my wife. I can not praise the restaurant highly enough. Quality, flavor, constancy and a great team of staff make this my favorite restaurant. When colleagues visit from England we always discuss trying somewhere new an inevitably end up eating in Dusit. I only wish I had more opportunity to visit. If you love thai, you'll love Dusit.

PS - They have been running an excellent fix priced lunch menu which is a great introduction to the restaurant.

I would struggle to fault Dusit; their food is a contemporary and simple, but executed perfectly, with service to match. HIghly recommended/

Probably the most consistent restaurant in Edinburgh, food, service and staff always excellent. Not cheap but worth saving the pennies for.
