An imposing 18th-century mansion, Pollok House could have easily stepped in as the location for the ‘Upstairs Downstairs’, murder-mystery movie, Gosford Park. Housed in the basement, the former kitchen of this grand house is suitably impressive, with the original off-green tiles, a wall full of black cooking ranges and a massive brass chandelier. Mrs Bridges would have approved of the food served and no mistake, the kind of fare that might have been prepared in such a kitchen in its heyday. The menu is café style, with light and more substantial options on offer. Good-sized starters include a salmon mousse, with a light fresh lemon taste, served with hot toast. The main course choice is limited, but the key here is quality. It includes a thick, slow-casseroled mushroom and beef stew, with a strong red wine flavour and soft yielding meat, a delight served with new potatoes, cabbage and string beans. For afters the marvellous home baking includes gigantic scones, chocolate slices and cakes, including a slightly over-fired carrot cake, with runny icing. There are plans to have special themed evening events and even a murder mystery night.

  • High point: Eating in a historical location
  • Low point: Slightly burned carrot cake
