At this Southside favourite, a delicatessen, café and fine dining-style restaurant are all housed under the same roof. The casual diner up front contains a busy collection of tables where sandwiches, pasta and sizeable pizzas are served through the day. To the rear, a more formal operation purrs down the back stairs. With its cream and red décor, complete with tabletop linen and flowers, this can feel like quite a romantic setting. Prices are higher and the food more indulgent here. Scallops, fillet steak and liqueur-rich sauces are employed to good effect in a lovingly crafted, authentic yet inventive menu. The spaghetti carbonara is laced with glossy egg yolks and intensely flavoured smoked cubes of pancetta, while the veal valdostana comprises tender medallions of young beef sautéed in white wine and fresh sage and topped with Parma ham and mozzarella. The surf and turf, Bella-style, is impressive, boasting sirloin steak with king prawns, queen scallops and lobster sauce. The wine list is exclusively Italian.
- High point: Quality Italian ingredients
- Low point: No windows means no natural light in the restaurant
