The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops. This review is taken from the 2007 edition.
In top tourist territory on the Royal Mile, Clever Dick's appeals to the casual visitor with an emphatically olde worlde Scottish theme. Travellers can pass their time examining the abundance of auld photos, pictures and trinkets that decorate the establishment. With stained glass windows, brass fittings, dark wood and old lamps as well, the look is very Victoriana, which may not be to everyone's taste. The new owners of Dick's are due to relaunch it as 'Whiski'. They plan to retain the traditional look and feel of the place, but give the trad Scottish pub grub menu an overhaul. Any change will be welcome as the formula which equates 'a wee taste of Scotland' with a starter-sized haggis, neeps & tatties has undoubtedly become rather tired and unappealing. [Changes still pending at time of going to press.]
