Located closer to the St George's Cross end of Great Western Road, Mancini is a bit away from the hub of the West End. This intimate place feels a little like a well-lit wine cellar with bare brick walls (hung in places with fairly lights), leather upholstered seats and large windows that open on to the street in the summer. Mancini has a great wine list, and each option is available by the glass. And with bottles of sparkling wine scattered around as objects of art, an aperitif of prosecco feels like a natural choice. The menu is selective and well thought out. Stone-baked pizzas are available and there is a good selection of daily specials. A sharing platter of antipasti offers a bountiful selection of hors d'oevres including massive olives, smooth chicken liver pâté and salty slices of Parma ham. Among the main courses, the fillet of pan-fried flaky salmon comes with a crispy basil crust, providing contrast between delicate fish and strong Italian herbs. The baked chocolate pudding is wonderful – dark sponge with rich chocolate oozing out everywhere. Service is unobtrusive and slick, deployed by knowledgeable and attractive staff.
- High point: Intelligent food with a great wine list
- Low point: 'One-bum' bathrooms
