Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is taken from the 2007 edition.

As Gambrino regular Ken Graham sipped a cappuccino, it was suggested to him that, if he enjoyed the restaurant so much, perhaps he should buy it. Five weeks later it was his. His hands-on style, coupled with that of the young Italian staff, provides personal, friendly service which begins with a complimentary bowl of plump black olives infused with herbs. To start, an antipasto dish is stacked with Parma ham, bresaola and salami, and is topped with a mass of peppery rocket, while grilled squid cooked with garlic and chilli packs a serious kick. Rosemary focaccia makes for a crisp and fragrant accompaniment. Mains offer a large selection of pasta, pizza and chicken dishes, all cooked where possible with organic produce and free-range poultry. Pizzas are thin, charred and generously topped, while the calzone, stuffed with cotto ham, mozzarella and cherry tomatoes, is larger than the plate. Happily, the cheery staff can box up any leftovers. The full-length window is ideal for people-watching and the chunky furniture, exposed brickwork and candle-light create a comforting atmosphere. With Gambrino aiming for all customers to get a table on even the busiest nights, there is a no-booking policy. Alternatively, the entire menu is available for takeaway.
