This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
An idiosyncratic venue, Dionika is infused with the passion of its owner and chef Juan Blanco, who has created an authentic menu based on the style of his native Galicia. On offer is a very good lunch deal of five tapas plates between two for £10 and a deli corner selling imported Spanish meats, cheeses, wines and oils, while the evening tapas selection covers an extensive starter list including a meaty and fantastically rich morcilla encebollada (black pudding with caramelised onions) and Kiev-like flamenquinas (chicken rolled in breadcrumbs, garlic butter and Iberian ham). It’s in the seafood-heavy dinner menu, though, that Blanco’s individual style is best expressed. Paella and a sirloin steak are available, although perhaps these don’t catch the imagination as much as a daily fish special or a mountainous fish platter for two (at £39.50 a head), both grilled in robustly macho style just like the calamares a la plancha – a whole, inky grilled squid that’s perhaps recommended for the more daring appetite.
- High point: Great value lunch deal
- Low point: Scruffy bathrooms let the side down

My wife and I have been here a couple of times in the past six weeks or so. The food is very good indeed. Fantastic fresh fish, expertly cooked. Wonderfully grilled slabs of grilled hake and so on - delicious. Easily compares with the best the city has for seafood. Wine list also really well chosen and not ruinously expensive. Service excellent. Chef a bit bonkers but charming and very knowledgeable - this is rare.
Music choice idiosyncratic - varies between non-intrusive Spanish music (good) and bright, insistent poppy stuff (not at all good). Still, at least it wasn't the G***y K***s.
It was very quiet - Dionika deserves to be much busier. We'd always hoped to find a friendly local restaurant with great food we could go to regularly, and we think we've found it. Highly recommended. It's not out of the way, as someone commented - it's at the bottom of Broughton Street or Dundas Street, more or less, which is hardly remote.
But for God's sake get the toilets sorted out. We're not normally prissy about such things, but it's just unsanitary down there. Not a good association when the kitchen is so close. No idea why anyone would consider it reasonable to leave things in such a state. These things really matter Dionika so please fix it. And we'll be back. Often.

We went to Dionika for a dinner for two. The restaurant was spacious and the atmosphere warm and relaxed, with Mediterranean-styled decor. We found the staff to be extremely friendly and natural. The menu looked great, with an emphasis on seafood, and we were not disappointed with our choices of sardines, chargrilled squid and oven-baked gambas. The food was fresh, carefully prepared and well-seasoned. The chef also came upstairs at the end of our meal to greet us and it was clear that he was serious about his food. The restaurant is a bit out of the way, but don't let that put you off. Also check out the website for recipes.
We would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Very expensive, but spacious inside, and gorgeous food! Staff are so friendly. Really recommend a visit, try going on the lunchtime set menu special though, as its loads cheaper, at £7.50.

my friend Mayer and i have had a very enjoyable experience today. we dined at the Dionika restaurant at Canon mill in Edinburgh. the welcome by the staff was nice, no need to hurry your order.after being served with a nice drink we ordered and the food was a delight. nice sized portions of well made food. the back ground music was soft and pleasant, you could see the other dinners were having a nice time to.the owner and chef has created a well run establishment. and the prices are very reasonable . i would recomend for anyone to go there, and feel sure you will come away felling very satisfied.Well done Juan....
