Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Taking over a successful restaurant in a plum location can be a poisoned chalice, but the new owners of Marynka have hit the ground running since taking over in March 2008. They do have an enviable head start in that they are also involved in fish wholesaling, supplying seafood to everyone from Dakota in South Queensferry through to Gordon Ramsay’s outlet in New York. A welcome new addition is a daytime shopfront fishmonger stuffed full of scallops, langoustines and fresh fish. Much of the seafood bounty makes its way on to the menu with plump king scallops working well with crisp streaky bacon, backed up by hake and cod mains, the latter perfectly pan-fried with a creamy mushroom risotto. They're not ones to break a winning formula, and the décor has been left alone for now, with bright yellow walls and richly textured modern art. The head chef has also been kept on, and many of the old favourites – such as rabbit and beef fillet – are still available. Expect the menu to gravitate more towards the North Sea as they bed in, but it looks like Marynka's good name will be as well preserved as any of the new arrivals fresh from the boats at Eyemouth.

  • High point: Fresh seafood on the plate and for home
  • Low point: Fishmonger's slab cleared away by evening

We have eaten at Marynka over the years and thoroughly enjoyed both the ambience and of course the food.

Being rather fond of seafood the appearance of the fish counter was a real bonus for us, not the easist area historically to buy such good produce. Shortly after we booked dinner and were extermely satisfied with every aspect of the meal, any minor concerns we may have had had about the new ownership changing the quality on offer evaporated.

The food rolling out of the kitchen was not over complex but very effective and the sauces and vegetable accompaniments in no way overshadowed the quality of the main ingredient.

The service was friendly, knowledgable and enthusiastic.

Fairly priced wine list too with a good selection of traditional european and some new world offerings.

If going for Dinner have a light lunch you really will want to savour a full three course experience here.

We will be back - often......

My wife and I have eaten at Marynka several times since we moved to the area. We have yet to be disappointed with any aspect of the restaurant. The food is consistently excellent, the service is attentive without being intrusive, and the wine is varied and excellent at all values.

We use Marynka for celebration meals, and as such we will always be visiting on occasion unless in the unlikely event of the standards deteriorating.

May it continue to be succesful in the future.
