Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Occupying a prime location just a stone's skip from the harbour at Dunbar, the Creel is a sparsely decorated restaurant with low wooden ceilings, stripped floors and dark wooden furniture, making the food the star attraction. Owner-chef Logan Thorburn is a follower of Slow Food principles and endeavours to support local suppliers, using as much of East Lothian's native produce as possible. Elegant simplicity is at the forefront of the daily-changing menu on which, unsurprisingly, fish plays a starring role.

10. creel regular, dunbar – 19 August 2010, 9:36pm2 starsCreel RestaurantReport

We have eaten regularly at the Creel since we moved to dunbar several years ago so my comments are based on quite a number of visits both at lunch and in the evening.

The food has usually been good and has progressively improved over the last couple of years - its now excellent

....BUT....!

Its a real shame the good work in the kitchen does not carry over to the front of house;

1 Service can be quite disorganised - staff don't deal at all well with any questions about the menu

2 Usually no music whatsoever - you can get away with this more in a large restaurant but in a small place like the creel most of what you hear whilst eating is everyone else chewing and swallowing. The one ocassion music was playing the CD continually jumped for the whole of our meal, we had to ask for it to be turned off.

3 White tables cloths? This is a really minor thing which would completely transform the atmostphere and cover up what currently looks like office meeting room furniture (rest of the room looks fantastic)

This Restaurant could be SUPERB, the food, the setting by the harbour - but Logan should be more aware of what is going on the other side of the kitchen door and not just focus on the food.

I hope these comments help

Apologies I posted the previous comment before I had finished. I had meant to say that I have a few allergies and I have never eaten at a more accomodating restaurant. To put this in context my fiance and I are commuters to Edinburgh and regularly eat out at Edinburgh's top restaurants such as the Witchery and the Tower. My party and I thought this restaurant was fabulous and the food fresh and delicious. As a local now (we moved out from Edinburgh) we will be making this a regular evening out.

I love my food, but with allergies to gluten, lactose and nuts it can be very difficult getting a good meal out.

I was visiting friends in Dunbar and we visited The Creel one night and we were not that impressed - and we really did go honest and definately did not confuse it with another restaurant! We went to a couple during our stay and I can remember the names of them all.

Perhaps some other reviewers have forgotten that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and that suggesting that people are confused where they have been or indeed didn't go at all is perhaps a little unfair.

I just felt it was all a bit overpriced for what you got and the service was patchy. The food was OK, but IN MY OPINION, not worth the money.

Just celebrated my wedding anniversary at the Creel. As usual the food was delicious, the service superb and the atmosphere intimate and welcoming. I recommend a visit to anyone who enjoys good food and a relaxed evening. I think Isla and Millie must be confusing the Creel in Dunbar with some other restaurant!

have eaten here twice now and both times it was absolutely superb, freshest ingredients, beautifully presented. The staff were very friendly and knew about the dishes. Extra little touches which make it special are the miniature frozen bloody marys or similar that you are given while looking at the menu. Not sure if Isla or Millie actually ate here as their comments do not reflect what we had, nor the great value for money.

4. Millie, Edinburgh – 11 May 2009, 11:36am1 starCreel RestaurantReport

We had a terrible meal here, food was really not very nice and so expensive for what it was. No views, which was a real shame and having looked at their website we kind of expected views of the Harbour. Staff also unfriendly. Really not worth the trip out of town for us I am afraid.

This Humble Restaurant just goes to Show that very simple, freshly prepared food can stand toe to toe along side the big boys and feel proud! The Creel Restaurant is the epitome of modern rustic food where the cosmetics are forgotten and the the proof of course is in the eating. We have loved it since we fist visited in November 2006 and have been several times since. Keep up the good work.
P.s. The Creel is great value for money and well worth the trip out of town!

One of the best meals I've ever had, well worth the half hour detour from Edinburgh.

Was really dissapointed especially after reading the above review. Food was very very average and very very overpriced. Nice location but that was about the best I can say.
