Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Rather incongruous in the modern surroundings of Tollcross' High Riggs, inside this is a cosy little log cabin-like café. It's easy to miss, but still sought out by a loyal office workers, mums and toddlers, students and pensioners. The usual café fare (nachos, baked potatoes and wraps) is popular, but it's the specials that give this place its edge. The chicken, chorizo and new potato casserole could easily feed two – generous hunks of meat and potatoes in a thick, spicy tomato sauce with that unmistakable home-cooked flavour. The equally successful vegetarian nachos come with fresh-tasting and flavoursome guacamole and salsa topped with melted cheese and sour cream. Come the weekend, there are extra breakfast options for those lucky enough to be enjoying a relaxing brunch. Those stopping by for coffee and cake aren't disappointed either, as the spiced apple and honey muffins – fresh from the oven at 5am – would justify a visit on their own, while the walnut cake is moist, dense and divine. A constant queue of takeaway customers adds to the bustle, but the staff stay chilled, perhaps liking the place as much as the clientele do.

  • High point: Amazingly generous portions…
  • Low point: …can make it difficult to finish those glorious desserts
