Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Cannily painted bright yellow to catch your eye as you walk down Earl Grey Street, the surprisingly spacious interior is almost Alpine with its wooden ceiling, wood and stone floors and slate bar. The food would go down a storm après-ski as well, as plates are piled high with comforting staples. Tarragon chicken and rice is disappointingly bland, but a rich smoked sausage and chorizo pasta bake and warmly spicy chicken quesadilla balance the scales. On weekends every table is filled with delicate customers ordering the all-day breakfast hangover cure, which uses Ramsay of Carluke bacon and Saunderson’s sausages to hit the spot. Owner and chef Baz makes a batch of scones and fruit muffins every day, ensuring the baking tastes 5am fresh. He does the same with the daily changing gluten-free soup, which is always made from scratch. Gluten-free Honeybun brownies were chosen for being superior to wheaty ones, and would ace any chocolate test. Unusually, the playlist is a considered feature – charmingly eclectic, from Nat King Cole to pop, and played a touch louder than background music.

  • High point: Dietary requirements are well provided for, particularly coeliacs.
  • Low point: Service on the slow side

Nice place inside. Looks better and more comfy than you'd think. No problems having a baby with us. Coffee and cakes were good but service was VERY slow and the place only half-full. Would go back though and was nice to hear the Gaelic group in the corner.

I have been here many times and found it great. However, I visited yesterday with two friends and each of us have a 1 year old. We were made to feel distinctly unwelcome and in the way. The male member of staff was surly with us throughout our stay and did not even attempt to hide his annoyance.

I offered to tidy up the inevitable crumbs on the floor only to be told "It's fine." and then hear the same member of staff apologise to the one other customer sitting nearby about the mess.

The place wasn't even busy.

If you are not a child-friendly establishment, don't advertise that you provide high chairs. I will certainly think twice about returning.

Looks like nothing from the outside and a tad '70s kitsch inside, but ignore all that. I passed this place by for years: a shame as it's welcoming, with unobtrusive yet helpful staff and delicious looking food at the counter. It's a good place to go for a late breakfast or a mid shop coffee with your book: the cheese scones are a must.
