A New York deli-style buffet within the Hilton, Minsky's provides diners with a casual alternative to the hotel's fine dining spot, Camerons [see Scottish]. A steak menu is available, but the buffet gives those with eyes bigger than their bellies something at which to marvel. Soups are rich with good stock, while a whole salmon takes centre stage amid plates of dill herring fillets and seafood cocktails. Salads are fairly standard, but there's a nice choice of Asian titbits next to the mussels and haggis, reflecting the hotel's international feel. Despite the management's efforts to recreate a classic Manhattan eatery with old photographs of the city, the pink-tinged roast beef with horseradish sauce clearly leans towards this side of the Atlantic for inspiration. Minsky's is a fitting family venue for Sunday lunch, during which a glass of sparkling wine is included in the price. Among desserts, there's a traditional rice pudding, but why stop there? The plate's virtually big enough for a bit of cheesecake, some chocolate steam pudding, mousse, fruit salad . . .
