Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Between the fairy lights and rustic pine tables and fittings, you might be surprised on first impressions to learn that Café Antipasti on Byres Road (not to be confused with the branch on Sauchiehall Street, which has different owners) is an Italian restaurant at all. Scan the functional and descriptive menu though, and you'll realise that the place doesn't intend to give customers a lesson in Italian culture – mere a taste of the country's cuisine in agreeably unpretentious surroundings. Spinach salad tossed with goat's cheese, pine nuts, ciabatta crust and balsamic dressing is a light, fresh starter. Even better are the chunks of grilled Italian sausage served in a small pot of tangy Roma tomato sauce. As a main course, it's hard to argue with a big, flaky slice of charred swordfish steak, served propped up on roast potatoes, surrounded by a full quartered lemon and drizzled with roasted garlic butter. Finishing up with one of Café Antipasti's fine coffees is recommended, as is snaring a perch on the edge of the balcony, from where you can enjoy a view out of the restaurant's floor-to-ceiling glass frontage. The city centre branch is almost identical in décor and the menu is similarly unassuming. Try the pan-fried gnocchi dumplings in a creamy pesto sauce for a starter, followed by their 'fantastic' beef and Italian sausage lasagne, which lives up to its billing.

  • High point: No gimmicks
  • Low point: A little cramped

Being Gluten free I was delighted to discover that this restaurant made their own GF pizza bases if given notice that you are booking. I went in personally to check this was the case, phoned them a week later to make a booking, called again on the morning of the booking to confirm my dietary requirements and having been assured on all three occasions that everything would be fine - I took 3 non GF friends there for lunch on Friday. The place was busy but our table was reserved so we ordered drinks and then 4 lunches. After 10 minutes the waitress came back and said "there is no GF pizza available, sorry - choose something else!" On being asked why she said that was what the chef had told her. I changed my order and didnt make a fuss but phoned later to ask why it had happened. The supervisor I spoke to then was the person who had originally taken the booking and apologised and said it should not have happened. Well it did, and though we did enjoy our lunch it was not what I went for so have to say I was disappointed. Dont know what more I could have done to make it work.

This is a brilliant little place. I particularly like the traditional tuscan bolognese, it comes closed wrapped in tin foil, sounds strange but I guess it's traditional! Everything else I have eaten from the menu has been lovely. Their sandwiches are nice too if you want a quick lunch.

Decor is nice and relaxing, service is really good. The manager is a nice guy too. It's quite a small place, but the food is excellent and that's what matters. For example, there's a place just across the road called The Salon, it's massive, but the food is well below the expected standard for the west end.

And this antipasti does the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted! Lovely warm sponge with warm chocolate sauce poured over, with a choice of ice cream or cream to go with it. I prefer cream but the manager recommends ice cream!

Don't listen to that person who gave it one star, they never even stayed to eat and there's a thing called a mouth to shout the waiters over!

We having been using Antipasta in Glasgow for about 8 years, mainly in Sauchiehall st and occasionaly in Byres Rd, My opartner and I went to the restuarant in Byres road tonight 5/11/09 and after about a 25 minute wait my2 covers arrived one pasta and one lamb.

The pasta was passable but the lamb was tough and during the meal the waitress ask if my meal was ok, I replied and demonstrated that I would need a hacksaw as it was very tough, she agreed after watching me try to cut it, when the bill came they had discounted a beer and a glass of wine. I said I would pay for the drinks as they were fine but would not pay for the Lamb, on the plate there was 4 pieces of lamb of which I had forced 2 down but could not cut the other two. the total discounted bill was £20 80 including a discount of £6.30 I refused to pay and offered £16.80 = my parterns meal , drinks but less my unedible Lamb. I was threatened with the police, my money thrown at me and told not to come back. the difference was £4.00. I will not be back and will take this further as the manageress was incompetant and either the chef or the lamb was of poor quality.

Nice restaurant but not particularly impressed with the cooking, had a sub standard calzone which has lead me to avoid returning. If you're after a pizza nip down the street to Little Italy or if you want to sit in then get into town and go to Amarone.

i went in here today with my husband for a light lunch and was so dissapointed, the waiter came over within 5 minutes but after asking us if we wanted anything to drink and was told no, he dissapeared and never returned to our table, i think he had forgotten that we were sitting there at all....another lady came in, and he gave her the menu then returned to her within 5 mins to take her order!...i also tried to get his attention by standing up at my table, but we decided to just leave....i was looking forward to a nice pate.....i know we should have complained at the time, but we were short of time and just decided to leave. there was no-one else in the place other than the woman that came in afer us..... ive been in the one in glasgow before and enjoyed it and was looking forward to a nice lunch but im afraid wont be in a hurry to return

I love this restaurant, been there soooo many times when I lived in Scotland, it's right in the heart of Byres Road, close to the Bars in Ashton Lane. I have never had a bad meal from here. They do not take bookings, so you just have to turn up. We've waited loads of times for a table as it is always busy, but the turnover is quite fast. The focaccai bread with roasted red peppers and goats cheese is heavenly and so is the grilled chicken in a cream sauce with asparagus and gnocchi, not to mention a few glasses or 5 of the house red wine! Enjoy......
