From the courtyard-style entrance, complete with statue, to the vine-covered trellises inside, La Piazzetta is a welcome, Mediterranean-style sanctuary with friendly service. Owner Phyllis Astarita and her Capri-born husband Costanzo (who is in charge of the kitchen) clearly put emphasis on enjoying food in an authentically relaxed setting, which includes the unusual opportunity to buy Italian pottery (hand-picked by the proprietors) at the door. Dishes are simple in both conception and presentation. A caprese salad starter, for example, is judiciously garnished, allowing the flavours of sliced mozzarella and tomato to shine through. Portions are plentiful without being intimidating. Spaghetti fruti di mare is served in a vibrant tomato sauce with fleshy, coral-coloured king prawns, while swordfish is served with an oil, herb and garlic butter which enhances, rather than overwhelms, the fish's meaty flavour. Surprisingly, there are no pizzas on the menu, but they can be ordered on request. Desserts include a tiramisu with the right balance of light sponge and rich cream, and a selection of ice-creams.
