Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

While other Glasgow pubs may aspire to gastro-pub status, Walkabout, housed in one corner of the giant Cineworld complex, is content to serve its predominant student and sports fan clientele lashings of beer with simple pub grub. This large, Australian-themed space, decked in green and yellow, is defiantly brash, with screens everywhere showing an array of sport, and a constant hum of chatter punctuated by noises of the games machines dotted throughout (including the sound of punters hammering the boxing machine). The no-frills menu offers starters such as breadcrumb-coated chicken strips with a pot of sweet chilli sauce for dipping, and tortilla chips topped with salsa, sour cream, guacamole, jalapeño peppers and a sparing sprinkle of cheese. While slightly more refined options exist – such as a duck sandwich on ciabatta with plum sauce – most people opt for the burgers, which are available in three sizes (from a manageable regular to a jaw-breaking 'ultimate') and in a range of meats including kangaroo. The 'Pommie' beef version is topped with stilton, onion rings and tomato. Puddings such as a summer fruits waffle layered with ice-cream follow the same filling vein.

  • High point: Many different burgers available
  • Low point: Abundance of fried food
