Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Part of a chain, Australian-themed sports bar Walkabout offers a budget-friendly dining experience for a young, noisy, studenty crowd. The Boomerang card entitles patrons to 25% off all food and drink once purchased for just a few quid. A jumble of sports news and music videos echo loudly from the large screens which surround the spacious colourful hall. Signs lead to the dunnies, large Australian flags hang patriotically from the ceiling and kangaroo fillet dishes are offered in the form of a salad, steak or sandwich. The menu is also big on traditional dishes such as sausage and mash and fish and chips with mushy peas. Walkabout is famed for its home-made burgers which are undeniably the most popular dish. The Sydneyside burger is generously topped with peppers and jalapenos and a must for those who love spicy food. All burgers are offered in different meats and with the option to double or triple. Starters include chicken tenders, large stringy sticks of chicken marinated in unexpectedly fiery peppered breadcrumbs. Dessert choices are limited. However, the chocolate fudge cake with white chocolate sauce dividing the layers is excellent served warm with ice-cream.

  • High point: The burgers
  • Low point: Dirty toilets
