Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Edinburgh’s wine bar scene might be expanding, but this intimate cubby hole on Cockburn Street has a decade on all of them. Ecco Vino is firmly Italian in its menu: generous plates of antipasti share a billing with enticing fish and meat dishes, pastas and risotti. A specials board emphasises the seasonality and locality of many ingredients used, and artfully presented dishes do not disappoint on flavour: an anchovy and caper pasta dish showcases the fresh produce needed to create such a pure and simple classic. The focus here is a notably international wine list, which offers around 22 wines by the glass as well as a monthly specials list which consists of some famous regions offered at sensible prices. The mellow mood is reflected in the stylish warm wood and leather interior, and the clever flip-top bar which encourages grazing and languorous dinners over a bottle of wine. Following a quintessentially Italian tiramisu you may be unwilling to move, but with such an inviting wine list you might find reason to while away several hours in this Edinburgh institution.

  • High point: So much wine, such little time
  • Low point: Manoeuvring into the bathroom

Ate here around New Year (2010-11) and really liked it. Very reasonably prices, food was tasty and wine choices were good. Will go back one day and have recommended to many people.
