Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Whether you're out partying with a group of friends or looking for a romantic evening for two, Suruchi Too seems to conjure up the right atmosphere. The elegant columned entrance and smart waiting area gives your dining experience a sense of occasion. Yet the laid-back, friendly staff and spacious layout inside means there's no pomp and ceremony – just good food in relaxed surroundings. Sharing the same menu as Suruchi on Nicolson Street, Suruchi Too pulls together flavours from across India. So you can visit the Himalayas via the deliciously coconuty kumbhi marial, partake of the Indian national dish butter chicken (tikka massala to you and me) infused with over 20 herbs and spices, or let the spicy lamb malabar transport you to the southern coast. In keeping with north Indian tradition, there's an excellent range of vegetarian main courses and starters, including succulent kofta dumplings. The 'exclusive curries' and 'maharaja's kitchen' sections of the menu offer everything from king prawns to venison, plus a raft of lamb and chicken dishes. Suruchi's owners are passionate about Indian food and culture, often combining both with special events such as a celebratory Diwali menu. This is a taste of south Asian in Leith that is well worth checking out.

  • High point: Relaxed atmosphere in smart surroundings
  • Low point: Eye-watering popadum sauce
