Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Already highly regarded for stylish, good-quality food and service, North Bridge Brasserie (part of the Scotsman Hotel) was about to undergo a comprehensive refurbishment as we went to press in April 2008. The heritage-listed wood and marble features will of course remain intact, but all furniture and carpets are set to be replaced by a more contemporary design. The new layout will create a smaller, funkier and more efficient bar, serving cocktails, champagne and an optional oyster accompaniment. While the street-level dining area aims to create a relaxed, casual ambience, the upstairs gallery will retain much of its current circumspect feel. Overall, the refurbishment is designed to effect a distinction between popping in for a drink and spending an entire evening enjoying the food and atmosphere. Further plans will include upgrading the already extensive menu, with the emphasis squarely on locally sourced ingredients and lots of fresh seafood, so fingers crossed that these amendments will not hike up the prices any higher. Either way, the high quality service at North Bridge looks set to continue when the restaurant opens up again in May.

  • High point: Refurbishment will upgrade an already slick operation
  • Low point: Some options on the pricey side

Great building and service, but gosh, anything from the main course is over priced: I ordered a plate of cheese for £6.5 and I received 5 tiny pieces of cheese (all 1 cm by 1 cm) and a small glass of wine was over £5 (don't get me wrong, the wine was very good). I eat very frequently out and most of the time in fine restaurants. The experience at the North Bridge Brasserie was spoiled by the disproportion between prices and offering.
