The 'Room in the…' chain has won considerable popularity in Edinburgh thanks to unpretentious surroundings, fulsome food and that rare beauty, a BYO policy. The West End branch, a snug basement beneath the frequently rowdy Teuchter’s pub on William Street, sits comfortably with this model. Red walls, pub furniture and a cheerful mural contribute to an air of bonhomie, which is echoed by the charming service. The menu has a rustic, Scottish heart with international twists; so a fillet of salmon is given a sweetening rum and demerara cure, while Scottish beetroot forms the foil for a nicely spiced couscous cake. Mains share the same globetrotting nature, but some, like the rich lamb shank with red cabbage, are more in the comforting realm of the Scottish Sunday dinner. Unfortunately, desserts are more comparable to the Scottish school dinner, with some all-too-familiar flavours in a custardy peach and pecan pot. Still, that's not going to stop a Room in the West End being a thoroughly easy place to enjoy yourself.
- High point: An unstuffy atmosphere and unstuffy food
- Low point: Not first choice for a special occasion

Went for an anniversary meal there in July. The quality of the food was great. Fantastic meal. The service however was rubbish. No attention to detail, no enjoy your meal, thank you for the generous tip, not even a smile. Very dissapointed with the lack of enjoyment from the waiting staff. We weren't asking for them to bounce around our table but it sure influenced our review of the restaurant. Won't be going back anytime soon.

We had a great dinner here - excellent service, delicious food (particularly good for vegetarians) and cosy atmosphere. A bonus is that you can BYOB.

If your not in a stag or hen night then don't bother coming as this place only serves you if you're beyond caring about food. Both my starter and main course were freezing cold and dumped on a hot plate - I don't know if the hot plate was meant to cook the food longer , who knows? Seared tuna that is cold on a pile of lettuce is revolting. The waitress said both the starter and main could be taken off the bill without asking permission from the chef and that said it all. Passed on dessert and ordered a liquer coffee thinking they couldn't muck that up but they did. I've been here loads before and have never complained about any food in my life. I won't be coming back here any time soon...

went here on a works night out the srevice was quiet good and the food was lovely but....it was really annoying that they try to get you out of the restaurant as quick as they can when you have finished your food i dont like being hurried ,especially when you have spent a fair bit of cash.
