Although Zest is ostensibly your standard, fairly modern curry house, there are many reasons to recommend it. The service is great – genial but never overbearing. The fact that you can get a late feast here also adds to the appeal: owner Asaddar Ali says that turning up a minute before closing time will still get you served. And the food itself stands up to most of the Indian restaurants in town. The chickpea-tempered mulligatawny soup might not be very spicy, but it's a welcome dish that not many other places would serve, while the tandoori-marinated, oven-baked trout is an inspired starter. The main course of jaipuri chicken also comes from the tandoor, and is served in a thick sauce of mushroom, onion and tomato. The chilli garlic prawns is a seafood variation on the same base, albeit with thick slices of green pepper and fried garlic adding some challenging heat to the vegetables. Zest does no more than is expected from a good Indian restaurant, yet doesn't put a foot wrong in the process.
