Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

From the smart, relaxed interior, dominated by Tim Stead's gorgeous solid wood furniture, to the robustly flavoured - although not inelegant - food, this is a restaurant that delivers high quality without flaunting it. This is largely reflected in the clientele, a slightly older, casually dressed crowd willing to pay extra for quality rather than the latest foodie fad. This is southern French cooking so vegetarians may wish to look elsewhere with limited, albeit appetising, choices amongst starters and mains. Rabbit stuffed with black pudding and wrapped in bacon gives a fair indication of both the style and quality of dishes on offer. The rabbit is impressively moist, with a wonderful synergy between the different meat flavours and the sweetness of accompanying caramelised apple. Indeed, if a criticism were to be levied it might be that some dishes are so good as to inspire dining envy among those who picked lesser offerings. Fish also plays a major role, especially the more intense varieties such as squid and salt cod. A fairly short, exclusively southern French wine list complements the robust flavours and offers good value at the lower end.
