This landmark building was originally home to the Salon cinema. After being converting into a restaurant and then run for a few more years as Gong by Stefan King's G1 Group, it has recently reverted back to the original namesake, bringing with it the picture-house theme. Decorated in a funky French renaissance style, the large space has striking patterned wall coverings, colourful furniture and comfy cushions. The attractive room is not necessarily complemented when two large screens have news broadcasts, but the Salon regularly shows films to dine by (Sunday to Thursday nights). The menu looks towards the Mediterranean and beyond for inspiration. Lamb koftas with a fresh minty yoghurt dip are a satisfying starter, and the balsamic dips with bread are tasty, too. Main courses range from hand-made pizzas to north African tagine. A slowly cooked pork belly is tender and goes well with a roast sweet potato. The Salon's supper club is useful for night owls to know about: on Friday and Saturday food is served up to 2am.
- High point: Well-designed room
- Low point: Eating to scenes from Reservoir Dogs
