If you’re looking for a lunch or snack option that healthy and filling, planet-friendly and low in salt, sugar as well as food miles, then Elephants and Bagels offers a handy solution. A penchant for pachyderms is a bonus; mostly customer-drawn they parade in all shapes and sizes across every surface of this cosy, welcoming café, situated on the corner of Nicholson Square. The variety of bagels is just as impressive, ranging from poppy seed to sesame, to onion. Select a filling from the board: perhaps smoked salmon and cream cheese, or chicken, coriander and lime; or even design your own, which might well become ‘bagel of the week’. The ingredients are nearly all locally sourced. Scrambled egg with either smoked salmon or bacon is a firm favourite for breakfast, either to take away or sit and eat with that rare treat, a properly hot (and strong) coffee. Lunchtime attracts a troop of students who enjoy free papers and Wifi as well as home-made soup and bagel deals, all served on biodegradable plates. Try to fit in a slice of shortbread, but if you can’t, take some away for later – it’s worth trumpeting about!
- High point: Generously filled bagels
- Low point: No room for cake!
