Rocking a basement off Blythswood Square, WTMS tones down the very metal tunes with some gentler Nick Cave when the office workers come in for lunch. Deceptively large inside, the walls of the various rooms, nooks and perches are decorated with album covers and cartoons, where everyone from suits to dreadlocked couriers rub shoulders while enjoying truly superior sandwiches. Along with home-made stew, seasonal soups and the intriguingly named ‘nuclear beans’, a huge whiteboard menu shows a quirkily named array of made-to-order bagels, paninis and toasties, stuffed with generous fillings, home-made mayonnaises and relishes, and fresh salad, all served with a side of potato salad drizzled with a delicious wholegrain mustard dressing. The Uncle Frank bagel contains crispy bacon, free-range chicken, tarragon mayo and slices of tomato and fresh green leaves, while the Beefcake is a panini crammed with roast beef and horseradish, smoked cheese and charred peppers. Add in a breakfast menu ranging from filled rolls to American-style pancake stacks with bacon, maple syrup and a side of Iron Maiden, and WTMS has got everything covered.
- High point: Sandwiches that truly rock
- Low point: Limited veggie choice
