The Brooklyn Café first opened in 1931 and its award-winning ice-cream has made it something of a Southside institution. Ask a member of staff and watch them become positively dewy-eyed about their main attraction. Ice-cream sundaes at Brooklyn are a real treat and would round off a taxing day's sunbathing in nearby Queen's Park very nicely. The delicious chocolate nut sundae deserves a special mention – fluffy and creamy vanilla ice-cream is smothered in nuts, doused in chocolate sauce and topped off with a dollop of whipped cream and chocolate vermicelli. Brooklyn Café has a lengthy menu, offering ciabata options, panini, pasta, burgers, soup and pizzas. The sea salt and rosemary focaccia makes a nice accompaniment to one of the reasonably priced pasta dishes. A specials menu changes every Wednesday and offers a selection of dishes, such as risotto or Italian sausages in a tomato sauce, which differ a little from the café's usual fare. Brooklyn Café's emphasis is on value for money, and portions are consequently large.
- High point: Ice-cream sundaes
- Low point: Over-cooked pasta
