Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Fishers is the sort of seafood restaurant that you can take fish phobic friends to. Despite the name, they can conjure up excellent 24-day hung beef steaks, with decadent optional foie gras with an ultra rich reduction sure to please committed carnivores. That said, the seafood is the real star with an impressive array of fish, crustaceans and molluscs to choose from. The mussels in piri piri with crème-fraiche make a change from the ubiquitous moules marinière as does the option of oysters grilled with bacon. Sustainable sourcing is evident with the choice of coley over cod for the fish and chips; the ‘de luxe’ option includes battered king prawns. A more imaginative main course might be the gilthead bream spiced up with oyster mushroom, spring onion and ginger. This flair continues with the stand-out option of hand-dived Orkney scallops with a pumpkin seed, fresh coriander and chilli pesto with a kick. The wine list is equally eclectic in a restaurant that manages to defy all the seafood clichés and in doing so nets more than just seafood lovers.

  • High point: Seafood for those who can appreciate a good mignonette, as well as those who thought a mignonette was a cut of steak
  • Low point: Service can be patchy when they are busy

We were told to give this restaurant a try if we wanted to sample some of Edinburghs best seafood.
Food was excellent if a little skimpy on the portions. Wine was good too and the restaurant looks great. Staff however are doing the kitchen staff a dis service. Didn't get one smile and hardly a look. Very miserable thankless staff ( some of the worst i have ever experienced ) Maitre D never spoke. They totally spoiled the whole experience for us. Even sat at the bar after spending close to £100, not even a hello, how was your food etc etc. smile guys, make us feel special not like we are interrupting.

Went a few years ago and thought it was fab. However, not nearly as good this time round. A chef was off that evening and it was quite chaotic. The first waitress came across as rude and offhand she wouldnt even take our drinks order - said she would come back for it in a minute - she didnt. The 2nd waitress was a lot better. Food very very average, but the wine was excellent and very well described in menu and pretty well priced.

3. Foodie, Edinburgh – 17 June 2009, 9:44amFishers in the CityReport

Portion size very small for the price.Haddock and chips was not haddock but cod I thought. Went with four others and their meals were also average rather than excellent. Soups were minestrone with an unfortunate resemblance to tinned spaghetti and fish soup which was better but too creamy. I feel they are trading on their reputation not on current performance. Also it took an hour from sitting down to get anything on the table.

turned up here at about 6.28pm and cheekily asked of they would still offer us the early dining menu! They did and the food and service was fantastic. Splashed a bit on the wine as the set menu is such great value. Classic seafood well presented in lovely surroundings. The one in Leith is even better so check that out too!
