The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops. This review is taken from the 2007 edition.
Although this place is only open two nights a week and is smaller than Langs' other restaurant, Oshi [see Far East], Aurora's menu is clearly no afterthought. The carefully presented range of ambitious dishes compensates for fairly bland surroundings on a mezzanine above the bar, which has a rather distinct hotel ambience to it. But, thankfully, the cuisine's flavours aren't predictable. For example, a cured organic salmon is light and subtle but still distinctive, accompanied by white asparagus and dill mayonnaise. The provenance of a beef fillet main course is attributed to the Castle of Mey and a Caithness herd connected to Prince Charles' North Highland Initiative. And it's certainly a dish fit for royalty: juicy and tender, accompanied by a morsel of fondant potato and some roasted baby onions. A slightly less filling alternative is the Gressingham duck breast, which is sweetly complemented by dark cherry sauce. Aurora's desserts, such as a raspberry and almond tart drizzled with sauce, are beautifully styled and not too filling.
- High point: Friendly service
- Low point: Lack of atmosphere
