Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Located in a semi-basement directly across from the King's Theatre, Massimo – which also has outlets in Bearsden (see below) and Livingston – is unsurprisingly very popular among theatregoers. Getting a table pre or post-performance can be tricky, so booking in advance is advisable. The décor and layout is smart and contemporary, between the stripped wood floor, glass partitions and open kitchen at the rear. It also has a cosy feeling, largely thanks to a roaring fire, which is a welcome sight on a chilly evening, whatever the season. The starters – split between crostini, soup, focaccia and antipasti selections – may appear to lack ambition. Still, the olive oil, basil and balsamic vinegar vegetables on crostini al peperoni are delicious. More obviously appealing are the main courses, particularly the giant classic calzone, which brims with salami, egg, ham, stuffed black olives and masses of melted mozzarella. If you have enough time before the curtain rises try the warm caramel shortcake, topped with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream and a glaze of chocolate sauce.

  • High point: Open fire
  • Low point: Overly fired bread
