Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

Massimo's popularity seems as much to do with its location, opposite King's Theatre, as the typically Italian fare served up in this basement venue. Modern stylings such as wooden floors and glass partitions give the space a surprisingly light and airy feel, while interest is added by familiar Italian decorations, an open kitchen and a cosy fireplace. The efficient staff competently handle the coachloads of diners that can descend pre and post-theatre, and the often full capacity provides a lively ambience without a feeling of overcrowding. The range of Italian classics and popular choices start with crostini coming big, thick and crispy with toppings such as mushrooms and wine, mascarpone and salmon, or tasty roasted and marinated peppers. A handful of focaccia appetisers also feature alongside antipasti ranging from cured meats and mussels to grilled prawns and mushrooms in a rich cheesy sauce. Pizzas and pastas dominate and are fairly orthodox in the sauces and toppings. Half a dozen mains offer fish, steak and chicken – with pollo alla spagnola accompanied by a tangy chorizo, pepper and tomato sauce.

  • High point: Warming toes by the open fire
  • Low point: Gluey mashed potato
