There are multiple branches in Glasgow of this popular restaurant, each with its own slightly different style and clientele. Cosy Ruthven Lane premises are tucked down a cobbled alley in the heart of the West End. It sticks to traditional Italian décor, while the refurbished Southside branch looks slick and modern. The cruise liner-like flagship on Royal Exchange Square offers art deco mirrors and some scattered potted plants that some might see as bordering on kitsch. Unless the weather affords outdoor dining, guests are poured into booths or seated at tables where a steady stream of hard-working waiters file past. The warm goat's cheese starter comes with a dollop of cranberry sauce, while the grilled sausage and sweet pepper gnocchi is a bit stodgy. Pizzas remain a winner. Those who like spicy toppings can choose the 'Mexicana' (chorizo sausage, red peppers and jalapeño chillis), while diners who prefer milder ingredients should enjoy the 'Suzannah' with roast chicken and bacon. Customers are urged to 'forget the calories' when it comes to puddings - and that is good advice to bear in mind when tucking into Di Maggio's 'dusky maiden' with vanilla and chocolate ice-cream, roasted almonds, home-made chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
