Football – alongside quality cuisine – is evidently a serious passion of Domenico Rossi, the head chef and joint proprietor at L'Aragosta since 2006. There's a national team calendar hanging above the doorway near a careworn tricolore. Elsewhere, a proudly framed AC Milan shirt covered in signatures shares the wall with black and white photos of past Italian glories. The food's a winner, too. The menu might be svelte, but it still poses guests with a selection conundrum. Beefy grilled tomatoes stuffed with gooey Gorgonzola and topped with fresh rocket and parmesan has to be a first-team starter, although mascarpone rolled in smoked salmon is a classy substitute. Pizza, pasta and meat dishes (chicken, veal, fish and steak) make up a familiar mid-meal trio. One of the stars is pollo Milanese – a huge supreme of bread-crumbed chicken served with spaghetti Napoli. If you're really hungry at the end, throw on some tartufo bianco – a scoop of coffee-centred vanilla ice-cream floating in fresh espresso and coated with crushed meringue. It's a great finisher.
- High point: Monthly Italian night: six courses, wine and live music for £35
- Low point: Staff may gloat about the Euro 2008 qualifiers
