Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

This traditional Italian neighbourhood trattoria has been under new management since September 2009 and is now in the hands of Federico Scala, who has more than 20 years' experience of the Glasgow Italian restaurant scene. The usual pictures of old Italy and football memorabilia adorn the walls, and warm and attentive service makes this an unpretentious and welcoming space conducive to relaxed and informal dining. There is a familiar range of pasta and big-hitting veal and beef dishes, but the emphasis is very much on seafood. A starter of king prawns in white wine with garlic and chilli is less a simple seafood dish, and more of a multi-tonal stir-fry with crisp vegetables and bean sprouts, which makes for a unexpected beginning to the meal. For the main course, two succulent seabass fillets glistening with butter, rest on soft spinach and are served with piquant capers for a bit of kick, and a soft pink rack of lamb is soused with a dark and earthy mushroom and port sauce. A boozier than usual tiramisu and an expertly made cappuccino round off the evening.

  • High point: Warm welcome
  • Low point: Unexpected beansprouts

What a dissapointment. Booked table for 6.30pm. It was 6.45pm before we were asked what we would like to drink and then another 15 minutes later before we were asked for our order. Very short staffed (only two working and seemed to be husband and wife ) could do with spending some bucks on hiring some staff if they want any return customers. We had booked a set meal through 5pm which had a choice of 5 starters, 5 mains but I fancied a risotto from the a la carte menu when I asked the waiter/proprietor if I could have this and pay a supplement he refused, saying I could have the chicken and asparagus risotto but without the chicken, I laughed thinking he was joking (oh no he wasn't). Opted for the spaghetti bolaganse, very average. Tables too close together. On a whole my advise is try somewhere else.

Restaurant under new ownership and it shows! What a fantastic place, lovely linens and cutlery, very comfortable. Staff could not have been any nicer. Food was totally authentic & delicious & generous portions. We generally frequent the city centre but not now, this is our new place! We'll be telling everyone about this wee gem. Its only a few mins walk from Shields Rd subway. Lots of offers and deals on, prices to suit everyone.
