Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

One of the elder statesmen of Glasgow’s curry houses. Many revellers will be aware of its steady presence on the merry-go-round of pubs, clubs and restaurants on Sauchiehall Street – making it an old favourite, with attractively late closing times. Last year’s refit sees chocolatey browns and burnt reds throughout, and a nod to recent dining trends with the option of thalis. But the focus is on the classics, with some nice twists. Pakoras are thick, and cumin-rich, while the egg version contrasts with its crisp exterior really well – simple, but effective. There’s lots from the tandoor, including increasingly popular seafood options salmon and monkfish, as well as scallops – not packing the big tandoori punch of the rest, but elegantly coated in lemon juice with their delicious flavour coming through alongside the fruity curry sauce. Elsewhere, the house biryani is a majestic spread of chicken and lamb – thoroughly seasoned, satisfyingly textured and, crucially, sliced into the correct size to balance with the flavours of the sauce, rice, potato and onion. Well-executed and satisfying – bywords for this old kid on the block.

  • High point: All the classics, late into the evening
  • Low point: Indian pop music is pretty loud

Has to be the worst curry I have ever been served and I have had a few. The service was good and the place itself was ok. We spoke to the waiter who was very nice but although we complained and did not finish our meals there was no discount on the bill.
The curry was a bland tasteless gloop which would have been improved had it been wallpaper paste.
Altogether very disappointing
On a slightly positive note the waiter did ask if we wanted to change our food which we declined.

I would give 4 stars for the food as it was very tasty and the service was pleasant. Unfortunately this was let down when the bill came and our List card was not acknowledged, despite us mentioning it when booking and on arrival. Even when we pointed out that the bill was far too much they only took £12 off instead of £18. An unnecessarily uncomfortable end to an otherwise lovely meal. Given that the reason we tried the restaurant was because it was on the list card, this put us off, so unfortunately we probably won't go back.

My wife and I went here last Wednesday and quite enjoyed ourselves. The food we ordered was simply excellent. The atmosphere was relaxed. The staff were really helpful and nice. And most importantly the price was decent, better than most on Sauchiehall Street. I can honestly say that we will be back!

This is one place you must avoid for all reasons unless you want to spoil your evening.

1) Foremost is poor quality of food.
2) Staff not courteous,
3) Indecent behaviour,
4) Ambience very poor and smells bad, poor air quality.

I have visited once and would never ever visit this place.

Cheers,

We had a nice meal there, but a bit shocked by the bill. We were charged for mango chutney, spiced onions & the raita to go along with the poppadoms! We had to quibble with the waiter to get our 2 for 1 on the main meal discount for having the listcard - we still got charged for both portions of rice.
Beware of hidden the extras!
