This genuine institution exudes pride and care, from the attentive, pleasant staff to the pristine tableware or the neat presentation of anything from a panini to a Scottish Aberdeen Angus steak burger. It's a sibling of Bradfords the baker, so one would expect popular cakes, scones and so forth. But it's the sheer variety of food (not to mention the vast choice of teas) that is surprising: such delicacies as fresh cream strawberry pastry or the house specialities of apple or rhubarb Cumnock tarts with cream are offer. There are also five different breakfast menus, available all day. Traditional savoury dishes include a heart-warming chicken and ham pie, served with Brussels sprouts and mashed turnips. Other options include 'lite bites', salads and toasties. Afternoon tea involves a pot of tea, a cake-stand sandwich selection, cream scone, shortbread and fresh cream cake - the full Miss Jean Brodie. The window tables offer a terrific view of the busy street life below, but, like the hazelnut meringues or pineapple soufflés, these seats are in hot demand.
